Gochang Region Introduction
Gochang means ‘a high land and barn-like state’ and was the first agricultural capital of Korea due to the revival of agriculture. Although agriculture is the main business in Gochang, it is also active in the fishery, salt farming, and ceramics manufacturing industries.
It is a representative tourist destination in Gochang and is a castle wall made of natural stone. This was a castle built to prevent the invasion of Japanese enemies, and surrounds Mt. Bangjang in Gochang. Despite the fact that it was a fortress, it is still relatively well preserved and largely undestroyed due to the fact that the castle was built around a mountain. It is the most preserved castle in Korea. There is a legend that if you step on the castle with a stone your head, you would live a long time without illness and reach the gate of paradise in the afterlife. This stepping tradition continues every year.
